How many characters can a post on X have?
280 for most accounts. X Premium allows long posts, up to 25,000 characters, which show their start with Show more. This counter counts against 280.
Why is X's count different from a plain character count?
X weighs characters: a link counts 23 however long, an emoji 2, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters 2. This counter uses the same weights, so a post that shows 280 or less here fits on X.
What happens past 280?
X will not post it. The part that does not fit is marked in red here, as X's own box marks it. Cut words, or split the text into a thread.
How does Split into a thread work?
It cuts the text into posts of 280 or less, at the end of a sentence or a line, never inside a word (unless one word is longer than a post). Numbering (1/5) is optional and counted in the 280. Each post has its own count and Copy.
Is my text sent or saved anywhere?
No. The count, the preview and the thread are made in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or kept.
